Long story full of emotion (Swiss Army)
In the beginning, if we look at the history of the development of horology, especially in Europe, in the beginning Switzerland was behind compared to other countries like Britain.
So what triggers the development of the Swiss watch industry to date? Let's go back to the 16th century, when the Huguenots from France fled and sought asylum as far as Geneva, where John Calvin was at that time a very important figure in the development of Geneva.
From these refugees Switzerland was introduced to watchmaking. John Calvin, better known as one of the pioneering religious figures in the Protestantism movement, was not only involved in the spiritual realm, his influence was so extensive that he indirectly became the de facto leader of Geneva.
Calvin banned the inhabitants of Geneva from living luxuriously so that wearing jewelry was prohibited. The Geneva goldsmiths were certainly affected by Calvin's teachings, so inevitably they slammed the steering wheel of their gold crafters trying to switch to producing other accessories, namely clocks.
Starting from where the Swiss stretch as the center of the watch industry emerged. Abraham-Louis Breguet Switzerland finally began to lead in clock technology since the appearance of Abraham-Louis Breguet who later discovered & patented various innovations such as pare-chute, spiral Breguet, and one of the most famous: tourbillon. Starting in the mid-19th century, the industrialization of clock production began. During this time the Swiss watch industry faced severe challenges from the United States. Production was increased but was less successful due to the low quality at the time. Swiss watchmakers finally took the strategy of producing high-priced, high-quality watches. This strategy then succeeded in returning the Swiss watch back to the top.
